Final Internet Explorer 7 gets released

      June 29th, 2006 by AndyAtHull

We blogged about how Microsoft wanted to release more versions of their browser after IE 7. Now it seems the final Beta of the new Internet Explorer has been released.

“The software maker released the third and last beta version of IE 7 on Thursday, getting closer to final delivery by the end of 2006. That will be the first major update to the popular Web browser in five years, and much of the focus for the new version is on security.

“Security was the No. 1 investment we made in IE 7, in terms of our development resources,” Tony Chor, Microsoft’s group program manager for the browser, said in an interview.”

This program claims to detect and destroy Spyware. And the file it uses to contain its definitions is called “spy“.

According to Sunbelt (Click here for screenshots) it is from Engage Marketing, a new Dollarrevenue bundled partner.

Incedently Dollarrevenue were behind the recent DDos attacks against webhelper4u.com. WebHelper has recently added a diary about their activities.

      ZoneAlarm to cease Win98/Millenium support

      June 24th, 2006 by AndyAtHull

Not a suprise really, with support for Win98/ME shortly ending from Microsoft. We are bound to see this happen. Not only to ZoneAlarm products. But for every other program that runs on 98 or ME.

      Windows 98se/ME Support Discontinued

On July 11, 2006,Microsoft will end support for Windows 98, 98SE and Me, which will have the resulting effect of making these operating systems less secure (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/support/endofsupport.mspx). Windows 98/Me are older operating systems, and therefore inherently more vulnerable to attacks than newer operating systems. Now that Microsoft will no longer provide security updates to this operating system it will become increasingly prone to security vulnerabilities.

Accordingly, Zone Labs will cease to support Windows 98/98SE/Me with the introduction of our version 6.5 ZoneAlarm family of products including ZoneAlarm® Internet Security Suite, ZoneAlarm® Pro, ZoneAlarm® Antivirus, ZoneAlarm® Anti-Spyware, and ZoneAlarm®.

      Note about pre-6.5 products:

Pre-6.5 products will continue to run on the Windows 98/98SE/Me operating system. However, there are a few new and advanced protection features in ZoneAlarm products that will not run due to technical limitations of this operating system. Zone Labs strongly recommends upgrading to a supported and current version of the Windows operating system. Zone Labs may end services to pre-6.5 products at any time.

As always, watch this blog for updates on more products following ZoneAlarm’s route.

Office hit by another security problem

      June 24th, 2006 by AndyAtHull

“A weakness in how Office applications handle Macromedia Flash files exposes Microsoft customers to cyberattacks, experts have warned.

Flash files embedded in Office documents could run and execute code without any warning, Symantec said in an alert sent to customers on Thursday. The security issue is the third problem reported within a week that affects Microsoft Office users.”

      Spyware & Sexually-Explicit Images

      June 22nd, 2006 by AndyAtHull

A very interesting and detailed article by Ben Edelman, once again!

The article shows in detail how ZenoTecnico and AlmondNet show AdultFriendFinder. How Look2me/Ad-w-a-r-e, FirstAdSolution, YieldManager, Falk AG/DoubleClick, eXact Advertising, MyGeek show Naughtyplay.

And last but not least how Direct Revenue show MorpheusOfPorn.

“It is particularly notable for Direct Revenue to show unrequested sexually-explicit materials because Direct Revenue has specifically promised not to do so. In the proposed settlement of a consumer class action lawsuit against Direct Revenue, provision (m) specifically requires that Direct Revenue’s software “will not display adult content ads unless the user is viewing adult websites.” In this example, I did not request any adult web site. Neither did I actually view any adult material (prior to the material shown by Direct Revenue): The AdultFriendFinder page at issue cannot be categorized as “adult,” because it includes no sexually-explicit images. In short, on these facts, I see a strong argument that Direct Revenue violated its duties under its settlement agreement.”

The article goes into great detail on the money trail for each ad. I would recommend you read it. It had my mind blowing, thats for sure.
