The top 10 in Spyware for 2005.

December 20th, 2005 by AndyAtHull

Many people make a top ten these days. And because Spyware has been so busy this year with new infections. Experts have come up with their own top ten Spyware Tricks for 2005. Check out Suzi’s top ten from here ZDNet.

My good friend Paperghost and his findings over the last year make the top ten at 8,5, 3 and 2. Good work on him!

Many experts in the field of Spyware expect 2006 to be even more explosive than this last year has been.

Windows computers were unprotected against new viruses for 56 days this year, research shows.

December 19th, 2005 by AndyAtHull

Browsing over at BBC I found this.

It is somewhat interesting. According to the read on average, anti-virus firms took 17 hours to respond to new threats. And some viruses took far longer to tackle and in one case specific defences took more than three weeks to appear.

And this is I gather all the virusses that did get discovered. I am pretty sure many more virusses out there are undiscovered. It also says that some anti-virus updates appear quicker these days. Which is good, providing you keep your anti-virus up to date. And you have a legit anti-virus.

“By contrast the Bagle and Mytob variants took far longer to tackle. In total, users went unprotected against Bagle variants for 79 hours and 25 minutes.”

“Mytob took far longer - 496 hours and 16 minutes for protection against all variants to appear.”

Personnaly I think it was much more than 56 days. Let’s just hope with a new Windows coming out soon. It will be better than the release XP had. And M$ cover the biggest issues. But also we expose the issues quicker. And don’t let end users be exposed to attacks.

This year has been a big year on malicious infections. Let’s hope we can make a better battle of it next year and tackle it better.

Link your site on here!

December 19th, 2005 by AndyAtHull

On the right we have a section called; Links we visit. At the moment we only have Google Search and a link to my other blog. I will be happy to add a few links to that section, only if I get your permission. And the sites are in the same field I am in. I could add several links without permission and get a slap from a few people. And even upset them. Which I do not want.

Sites that have been added to this section support our work and we support theirs. Many blogs/sites/forums out there are a tight community and know each other.

If you wish for your site to be placed there. Leave me a comment with your homepage and I will get back to you. Otherwise ignore this post…..

Edit - 10th of Feb 2006 - 88×31 images are also accepted. If you want; please post the code in a comment and I can edit your post so that no one else will see it afterwards.

New blog, Security-Cadets

December 16th, 2005 by AndyAtHull

I’d like to add that this blog has no involvement with any national security. Or any security cadet sceme that associates itself with an army. Silly to bring this up. But crucial.

This is a brand spanking new blog. A blog about the security issues out there. I am fairly new in discovering the latest flaws and what not. But I hope to give you the latest happenings out there before it starts effecting end users. Also rogue installations, the lot.

I am currently training with HijackThis at a well known board. As HijackThis is a great tool. All it does is tell you what problems an end user is having. And you just give instructions on cleaning their system. Which I am all for. But I want to go that step further. I want to expose the companies out there that are behind these scams. With a bit of luck I may have my own forum soon. But that is another story.

So, who am I? What do I do? I go by the name of AndyAtHull on many well known boards out there. I am not well known yet as a security expert. But I hope to be soon. What got me into this was simple. If you pay for a computer, what do you expect? You expect a good stable system, right? And I agree. I feel everyone has a right to that! And I feel rogue companies out there are taking advantage of ones system. Just to gain the odd quid. Which I think is wrong. So that is where I and many others come in.

As I am fairly busy training at the moment. I don’t expect to have this up and running to full speed. I won’t have enough time to explore. But I do promise to drop the odd story that someone else has found or exposed.

Stay tuned…
